Black Sea Coast, Sakar Mountains, Eastern Rhodopes, 9 days

Would you like to see pelicans, vultures, eagles and Eastern Mediterranean? Then join our birding holiday to Bulgaria to experience stunning bird species, beautiful landscapes, rare butterflies and dragonflies and friendly people. Our circular bird watching trip takes you to the best places in the country from the Black Sea Coast to the Eastern Rhodope Mountains.

Birding along the Black Sea Coast

The Black Sea Coast is characterised by shallow lakes, beautiful steppe grasslands and riverine forests. It is difficult to describe the ornithological wealth of this area. It offers the easternmost breeding populations of Aquatic Warbler and Pied Wheatear, flocks of White and Dalmatian Pelicans, migrating raptors and waders, Rose-coloured Starlings and so much more.

Birding in the Mountains

The Sakar and Strandja Mountains along the Turkish border are a paradise for raptors and have an extraordinary biodiversity of fauna and flora. Imperial, Lesser Spotted, Short-toed and Booted Eagle, Levant Sparrowhawk, Black Kite, Long-legged Buzzard, Montagu’s Harrier are all breeding and roadside wires are dotted with colourful Bee-eaters, Rollers, Black-headed Buntings, Red-backed and Woodchat Shrikes.

The Eastern Rhodope Mountains are famed for their breeding vultures and feeding tables, but they are also home to Olive-tree Warbler, Masked Shrike, Sombre Tit, Chukar, Pallid Swift, Western Rock Nuthatch, Eastern Bonelli’s, Eastern Orphean and Subalpine Warbler, Ortolan and Rock Bunting.
